Experience:

  • Phephani is the author/co-author of approximately 3 publications, including a peer reviewed book chapter, 2 internationally accredited articles in two different academic journals.
  • 1997 - 1998 - History and English Educator, Dassenhoek High School.
  • 2005 - 2011 - Social Sciences, IsiZulu and English Educator, Mafumbuka High School.
  • 2005 - 2006 - Daily Newspaper Matric Matters Columnist (English 1st Additional Language, Independent Newspaper (PTY) LTD.
  • 2012 - 2015 - Founder member of isiZulu Discipline, UFS – QwaQwa Campus.
  • 2012- 2015 - Full Lecturer in the African Languages Department, UFS QwaQwa Campus.
  • 2012- 2015 - IsiZulu (UZE & USZ) coordinator, UFS South Campus

Accomplishments:

  • Phephani has single-handedly developed about 8 Modules for isiZulu Discipline, under African Languages Department, as a head and a lecturer between 2012 and 2015, at the University of Free State, QwaQwa Campus

Awards:

  • 1993 Award for best poetry writer for the school Magazine, Ilanga H. School.
  • 2009 HOD’s merit award, Mafumbuka H.School.
  • 2010 Certificate of Appreciation for the role-well played which gained the school a good Matric pass rate, Mafumbuka H.School.
  • 2011 Certificate of Appreciation for tireless and selfless commitment in the study supervision outside the prescribed teaching time in 2011, Mafumbuka H.School.
  • 2011 Certificate of Appreciation for a dedicated involvement in the s teaching of learners for the period term 1 and 11, in 2011, Mafumbuka H.School.
  • 2013 Certificate of Participation in the KwaZulu-Natal’s Colloquium on African Languages in South Africa’s Despensation of Freedom and Democracy.

Research Interests:

  • His research interests focuses on the language policy implementation and developmental studies.

Teaching Interests:

  • His Teaching interest focuses on IsiZulu literature, Linguistics, language across the curriculum, language in media and language policy implementation

Supervision:

  • His supervision at this point is at Honors students’ level.

Community Involvement/Outreach:

1997 - 2011

  • During this period he has been a highly dedicated professional who selflessly gave his all to empower his immediate learners and the community at large. At school he served as a 'teacher liaison officer' who facilitated the activities of the body known as Representative Council of Learners which mediates in the affairs between learners and educators.
  • His heart for community empowerment got him involved in Adult Basic Education Training programme which he did during weekends with the endeavor to get illiterate adults taught reading, writing and arithmetic.
  • Without tiring he was also spearheading the Vukile Project which specifically catered for those learners from destitute home- backgrounds. This was kind of a feeding scheme where learners were identified and roped into this scheme. He has always had a heart for the people particularly those who are poverty- stricken and underprivileged.

2010 -2011

  • initiated a partnership between the deprived community of Mayville and the University of KwaZulu-Natal to drive community development projects, promote primary health care initiatives and facilitate community service learning.

2010 - 2011

  • Member of the Transformation Task Team and a member of the Committee for Reconciliation and Democracy of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
